Textbook Rentals FAQ – students

 

Q: What are textbook rentals?

We are offering a money-saving method to get you your textbooks! You have the option of renting your textbook for a lower cost than buying.  You can RENT your textbook for a rental fee (up to 50% off the new price!), use it for the term and return it to a Bear Essentials location by the due date.

 

Q: How do I rent a textbook at Bear Essentials?

Come into Bear Essentials at Barrie, Orillia or Owen Sound campuses. Find the textbook you need (with help from our friendly staff!).  Look for a shelf tag that indicates the book is available for rent and bring the textbook to up to the register.

 

Q: Can I rent a textbook online?

Textbook rentals will be available online at www.georgianstores.com. After you register and get your booklist you can see if your book is available for rent.  RENTALS MUST BE PICKED UP AT A DEPOT LOCATION - NO SHIPPING.

 

Q: What do I need to rent a textbook?

You will need a valid Georgian College student card, credit card (MASTERCARD OR VISA ONLY) and a Georgian College email address. You also must be 18 years old to rent.

 

Q: I am under 18 but I would like to rent.  What do I do?

Although you are not allowed to rent on your own, you can have a parent rent on your behalf.  You and your parent must be present at the time of the rental and sign the rental agreement.

 

Q: How do I know which textbooks are available to rent?

Find the book you need and check if there is a pink shelf tag that says it is available for rent.  You can also search for your book online and see what/ if the option is available for your title!

 

Q: How long can I keep the rental for?

The textbook rental can be used until the due date. This date will be indicated on your receipt.  It is typically the last day of final exams.

 

Q: How much does it cost to rent?

It depends on which book you are renting, but we offer savings of up to 50% off the new price.

 

Q: How do I pay for my textbook rental?

You can pay for your textbook using debit, credit, or cash but you require a VISA or MASTERCARD to rent so we can charge your account if you do not return the rental.

 

Q: Can I return my textbook rental for a full refund?

You can return your textbook within 10 days of renting for a full refund. However we do not accept any refunds after the Refund Expiry Date

 

 

Q: What if I drop my class and no longer need the textbook rental?

You can return your textbook for a refund within 10 days of renting.  All refunds must comply with our textbook return policy. However, we do not accept any refunds after the Refund Expiry Date. NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

Q: What happens if I lose or damage the rental?

You will be charged for a replacement along with a processing fee (plus applicable taxes).  Both are in addition to the rental fee.  

 

Q: What happens if I don’t return my textbook rental by the due date?

You will be charged for a replacement along with a processing fee.  Both are in addition to the rental fee.  

Q: How much are the non-return fees?

We will charge you the new selling price of the book at the time it was rented, along with a $10.00 processing fee per book (plus applicable taxes). Both are in addition to the rental fee you paid when you rented the book.

 

Q: Am I able to purchase the textbook I rented at the end of the rental period?

No. You must return the book in good condition by the due date. 

 

Q: Can the bookstore refuse to accept my textbook rental when I return it?

Yes. The rental is required to be in an acceptable condition when it is returned.  The right to refuse a rental return is at the sole discretion of the Bookstore. Any markings that do not allow the textbook to be re-used will not be accepted.

 

Q: Can I write and highlight in the textbook I am renting?

Q: Why is my textbook not available for rent?

Only a select number of textbooks are available for rent.  We are hoping to increase the number of rentals every semester.

 

Q: Where do I return my textbook at the end of the rental period?

You can return your textbook to any of the registers in Bear Essentials (Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound).

 

Q: Can I return my textbooks through the mail?

No. Textbooks must be returned to the bookstore in person.

 

Q: What if I forget when my rental due date is?

We will send out an email reminding you that your due date is approaching as a courtesy.  However, it is your responsibility to give us the correct email address and to return the rental by the due date. 

 

Q: What do I do with the book once I have been charged the non-return fees?

The book is yours to keep.

 

Q: Do I have to rent my textbook?

No. You have the choice to buy at the point of purchase. Georgian Stores offers new, used and digital textbooks too.

 

Q: Do I have to be a student to rent a textbook?

Yes. You must have a valid student card and number.

 

Q: Do I get any money back when I rent my textbook?

No. The rental fee that you pay is for the use of the textbook for the semester.
